Today, I had the pleasure of joining the Google for Startups Immersion: Black Founders showcase event. There was an impressive roster of Experts, Investors and Startup Founders. The event was hosted by the incredible, Marta Krupinska who leads Google for Startups in UK which enables startups to succeed by giving access to Google resources. Marta made a powerful introduction, sharing sentiments which I wholeheartedly agreed with, that if we want technology to reflect ‘everyone’, it has to be built by ‘everyone’. I’m pleased that Google for Startups is committed to making the world and tech more equitable. Google for Startups are soon launching the Black Founders Fund, non-equity investing $2 million in Black business, as well as $3 million in Google Ads, $5 million is total.

Bim Afolami MP, an advocate and supporter of Black tech entrepreneurship highlights that in government, entrepreneurship is thought about in a ‘very abstract way’. We have to recognise there are invisible barriers that Black founders face that need to be addressed. Bim Afolami mentioned that black young people are successful in tech and entrepreneurship, away from the traditional sectors of sports and entertainment which they were previously reserved soley for.
