What is Femtech?

As a woman, I take great interest in the development of solutions that can help, and even hinder, my health. ‘Femtech’ is a relatively new term coined by founder, Ida Tin of period tracking app called Clue in 2016. Only 6 years ago, the creation of the term ‘Femtech’ was defined to unite founders, investors, thought leaders, new studies, media and the like.

Femtech can be simply described as health software, solutions and tech-enabled products that cater to female biological needs. Femtech is more than just period tracking apps (although they’re great). Over the years, we have seen an ‘in’-pouring of new innovations and tech solutions pertaining to women’s health.

Starkly, until 1993, (really not that long ago), women were largely excluded from medical trials. The fallout of this is much of our medical research was modelled on the understanding of male physiology. Therefore, ignoring the nuances of the beautiful woman’s body from skin deep (cellular, hormonal) to more ‘on the surface’ uniqueness (skin, social needs). The gender health gap is something we’re still overcoming due to the centuries of mismanagement and misrepresentation. This lack of representation also plagues our technology solutions today.
