‘Woman in Tech’ — the importance of role models and taking up space in male dominated industries
If you haven’t seen the term ‘Woman in Tech’ banded around, then respectfully, where have you been hiding? Technology continues to be the fastest growing industry…There’s no coincidence that the technology titans continue to lead most, if not all, lists of the most profitable businesses in the world. Yes, I’m referring to Apple, Amazon, Alibaba, Facebook, plus Microsoft etc. It’s no surprise, that the founders of these companies are also some of the wealthiest people…billionaires, to be exact, but that’s not the crux of my point.
Other than the wealth they’ve amassed through their innovations, the founders of all these tech giants are men.
In my first ever musings, I quickly highlighted the fact that tech is a male dominated industry. I wrote tech is ‘a space, like many corporate spaces, traditionally dominated by men, without overlaying other diverse identifiers such as race, religion and sexual orientation.’ This is one of the many reasons why we all need to appreciate the importance of the term ‘Woman in Tech’ because it signifies a woman taking up her rightful space in a male dominated industry.
